Quick Overview

VanillaOur 100% pure Vanilla 'total' essential oils are CO2 distilled from Vanilla beans grown in Madagascar and Tahiti.

The beans and extraction process of the Madagascar variety is completely certified organic, and a very high 26% vanillin content.

This oil has ten to twenty times the amount of vanillin in a 10-fold solvent extracted resin, and is considered a very high grade oil.

The Tahitian vanilla is a relative newcomer to "commercial" product amounts.

It has a wonderfully-sweet vanilla aroma, and in comparison the Madagascar vanilla could be described as "buttery and smooth". They are both very nice!

Botanical Name: Vanilla planifolia

VanillaKnown as 'bourbon', Mexican, and Reunion Vanilla, this perennial climbing vine can reach up to 25 meters in height and produces both white, trumpeted flowers and green pods (also called beans). A native species to Mexico and Central America, the pods are typically cultivated in Madagascar and Mexico then shipped to Europe or the United States for curing. Curing the pods entails first fermentation then drying; it is this process that enables the fragrance known as true Vanilla to emerge.

About the Oil

This essential oil is distilled using carbon dioxide from the pods of Vanilla vines organically grown in Madagascar. The CO2 distillation allows for a pure extraction of the aromatic compounds without adding heat or pressure. It is 200 times stronger than common Vanilla extract used for culinary purposes, and 14 times stronger than a "10-Fold" extract. The phenyl esters and other natural chemical compounds make Vanilla a delicacy for the nose and palate. 'vanillin' is the chemical constituent that gives Vanilla its unique aroma. Concentrations of this molecule usually make up 2% of the oil, yet this distillation sees 26% vanillin content.

Note: Low-priced Vanilla is most often a solvent extract or a synthetic aromatic while still being labeled as 'essential oil'.

Aromatherapy Notes

This Vanilla essential oil has a dense, gentle, rich, creamy, balanced, classic 'vanilla bean' aroma with a slightly spiced undertone. The CO2 extract has high vanillin content and therefore at most, half the amount is needed to produce the same aromatic and therapeutic results expected from most other Vanilla essential oils. Vanilla essential oil is added in small amounts to many blends to 'round out' the aromas, bringing a balance and smoothness to natural perfumes and aromatic creations. Vanilla blends well with: Sandalwood, Vetiver, Balsam and spice oils.

Traditional Uses

Vanilla essential oil has been traditionally used as a flavoring agent, an aphrodisiac and to balance the emotions.

Vanilla is considered non-toxic, a non-irritant and non-sensitizing, however, this CO2 distillation is very potent and should therefore only be used in small quantities. If pregnant or breast-feeding, consult a physician prior to use.
