helichrysumThe steam distilled oil of the Italian Everlasting is one of the strongest anti-inflammatories.  The fragrance is warm, slightly honey like, rich and buttery, with green notes of wood, spices, herb. It is a fascinating oil because it is made up of several layers of notes that appear to unfold during the dry down.

Botanical Name: Helichrysum italicum

Helichrysum, also known as "Everlasting" or "Immortelle"essential oil, is a native species to eastern and northern regions of Africa. It is now adapted to cultivation in the Mediterranean regions of Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain and France.

There are over 500 different species of Helichrysum, though it is only the 'italicum' species that is the true (immortelle/everlasting) varietal with the regenerative actions attributed to this multi-faceted and unique oil. The italicum spp. serotinum sub-species, native to Corsica, contains the highest levels of neryl acetate.

Aromatherapy Notes

Aromatically, it is thought to open the heart and clear old emotional wounds. Considered a very important essential oil in aromatherapy, we get many clients calling back for more of this oil, claiming the profound results they have experienced.

This Helichrysum essential oil is light bodied and clear in color with a distinctly medicinal and herbaceous, bright top note followed by camphoraceous, musty, green tea-like middle notes and a fresh, cedar-like woody undertone.

Traditional Uses

The word Helichrysum is derived from the Greek word helios meaning sun and chrysos meaning gold. This is a reference to the golden color of many of the flowers from this botanical genus. Helichrysum has been used since the time of the ancient Greeks for its great wound healing ability, and was used often after battles.

In Europe, Helichrysum has been used for generations as a tonic for respiratory complaints such as asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. Headaches (including migraines), liver ailments, allergies and psoriasis were also commonly cured with this flower, either in tea or oil form.
